On GCSE Results day, Director of Shrewsbury-based Salop Design & Engineering Christopher Greenough is urging more young people to consider a career in engineering.
Salop have long been advocates of bringing through more people into the sector. In 2015, the group launched a bespoke, Engineering & Manufacturing Training Academy at their site in Shrewsbury in conjunction with their current training provider and fellow Made in the Midlands member In-Comm Training & Business Service.
The firm was also part of a consortium alongside Classic Motor Cars, Grainger & Worrall, Salop Design & Engineering and In-Comm to create the Marches Centre for Manufacturing Technology to provide a high-tech environment for young people to learn from engineering experts on the latest technology aiming to give them opportunities to apply their new found skills on real life manufacturing situations.
Christopher Greenough is driving the benefits of young people to pursue a STEM career.
He said “With the GCSE results due today, remember that exams and tests in any shape or form, are only the very start of a journey that will become a job and then a career. Everyone learns in different ways, some work best through further education, some work best through vocational training, but all have an ability that can be unlocked.”
With advanced manufacturing trends starting to arise in SME businesses as the engineering sector enters the fourth industrial revolution, Chris believe there are more opportunities than ever to work in manufacturing.
He added “Manufacturing has great opportunities for free thinking, talented people, and the sector is changing rapidly, with Industry 4.0 and the next industrial revolution heading our way. There are more varied roles within the sector than people know, and my aim is to help educate the next generation to the fantastic opportunities available. An apprenticeship route is a great way to get to know a company and its workings, and while you earn and learn, you can also end up with a loan free degree.
So whether you go on to College, University or choose an apprenticeship, have a look at manufacturing and engineering – it is a great sector to be in”.
